Consideration should be given to the creation of a memorial that reflects the sacrifices made by Welsh men and women on D-Day.
The call – from the Welsh Conservatives - comes as 70th anniversary tributes to all those involved remain fresh in the memory.
Assembly Members have emphasised the inclusion of a monument to Welsh regiments – either in Wales, or at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire – within future anniversary tributes and services.
Some 160,000 troops crossed the Channel on June 6th 1944, some born and bred in Wales.
The Leader of the Welsh Conservatives has also highlighted the pressing need for a Veterans Card in Wales – and urged the Welsh Government to swiftly implement proposals.
The party’s 2011 manifesto announced plans for a card - that would include:
• An expansion of the existing free bus pass scheme to include veterans
•Free entry to local authority swimming pools
•Free entry to CADW sites
•Priority treatment for service related conditions/injuries on the NHS
•Priority delivery of Disabled Facilities Grants for home adaption
In recent weeks, the potential for a pilot scheme has been suggested by the Local Government Minister.
Welsh Conservative Leader, Andrew RT Davies AM, said:
“My respect and admiration for everything our ancestors gave in the pursuit of freedom is limitless. We are indebted to their actions and we owe them our way of life.
“While no amount of memorials and tributes can ever truly be enough – consideration of a D-Day monument that reflects Welsh sacrifices is long overdue.
“I would like to see the Welsh Government give serious and swift regard to the form of that memorial – and its location.”
Mr Davies went on to call for further support for armed services personnel – and the introduction of a Veterans Card.
He said:
“Our armed forces do a truly incredible job on a daily basis.
“Their untiring loyalty, courage and professionalism set an example to all of us and we should continue to show our gratitude in any way that we can.
“While the Welsh government has indicated it is prepared to consider our plans for a veterans card – warm words aren’t enough.
“I want to see this proposal implemented fully and swiftly.
“This is a commitment that would provide personnel with a number of benefits – and serve as a small acknowledgement of their hard work and determination, throughout Wales, and across the world.”
