As part of the fiscal statement by UK Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, VAT-free shopping is being introduced in order to boost the retail and hospitality sectors.
Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative Shadow Tourism Minister, Tom Giffard MS said:
“The announcement today that visitors to the UK will be able to benefit from VAT-free shopping coupled with the substantial package of support and tax cuts for business are great news for the tourism sector.
“It is a stark contrast to the Labour Government here in Wales’ relentless attack on the tourism industry. Their plans to introduce a regressive tourist tax will deter visitors and put livelihoods at risk, as 1-in-7 Welsh jobs rely on the sector.
“We urge Labour to take note of the Conservative Government’s approach, change course and back the Welsh tourism industry.”
The Labour Government has begun a consultation on the implementation of a tourism tax, in Wales. It is widely unpopular with key industry groups.
