Commenting on the news that the Labour Welsh Government have decided to push plans for gender zipped lists for Senedd elections in Wales from the 2026 election to 2030, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for the Constitution, Darren Millar MS said:
“The Welsh Labour Government finally appears to be waking up to the fact that the Senedd does not have the powers to legislate on gender quotas for Welsh Parliament elections.
“To press ahead would pose a very real risk of challenge to the outcome of the Senedd elections in 2026.
“Instead of kicking the Bill into the long grass, Labour Ministers should now abandon this divisive legislation altogether and focus its attention on the priorities of the people of Wales, including our struggling NHS, standards in our schools, and driving improvements in the Welsh economy.”
He added:
“Members of the Senedd should be elected on their merit, not on the basis of their gender, race, religion or any other protected characteristic.”
