Labour’s reading crisis is a national scandal

• The cueing method of teaching pupils to read has been banned in England since 2005 to great success.
• The widely accepted phonics method of teaching pupils to read is backed by evidence and is the universally accepted teaching method.

Responding to the ongoing reading crisis in Wales, Tom Giffard MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Education Minister, said: 

“It is clear that Labour are completely out of their depth, it is a national scandal that 1-in-5 children are leaving primary school functionally illiterate.

“Labour’s Education Minister has U-turned three times on this specific issue which will do nothing to provide clarity for schools and their indecision is harming our children’s future.

“As the reading crisis deepens, it is clear that Labour will continue to put ideology over evidence, meanwhile our children are being failed. The Welsh Conservatives will ban the cueing method of teaching and save Labour’s lost generation.”
