Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy was delighted to open the Nuclear debate in the Senedd yesterday.
Following the investment in the Wylfa site by the UK Conservative Government, nuclear energy is back on the agenda in North Wales. The site was purchased as part of a £160m deal back in March and is now set to host the next generation of new gigawatt nuclear power.
However, during the debate, it was noted that Plaid Cymru was struggling to establish a coherent position on the future of nuclear energy in Wales.
Commenting on this, Janet said:
“Last night’s debate was one of high importance and extreme relevance. The UK’s energy independence is vital to secure a sustainable future and nuclear power is at the very heart of that.
“Thanks to the UK Conservative Government and Ynys Môn’s very own Virgina Crosbie, nuclear energy is now returning to Wales, showing a commitment to not only future UK energy security, but also to the future of Wales as an industry leader in nuclear energy.
“However, as I noted in my speech, Plaid Cymru have consistently been unable to give a coherent position on nuclear energy. Clearly, the party is so caught up in ideology and independence they are unable to reach a solid position on this most important of issues. Not to mention their view on our nuclear deterrence, Trident, which they would gladly scrap.
“If they’re so keen for independence, I ask them: Whose nuclear umbrella will they rely on for protection from other nuclear states when they are responsible for their own defence?”
