The Welsh Parliament extended its congratulations to Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of her platinum jubilee in a debate led by the Welsh Conservatives.
Shadow Minister for the Constitution, Darren Millar MS, opened the debate, describing The Queen as the country’s “greatest ambassador”, her importance in representing the nation when world figures visit the United Kingdom, and her higher favourability ratings in Wales than elsewhere in the UK.
Other Welsh Conservative MSs who spoke during the debate to give their congratulations were Natasha Asghar, Sam Rowlands, Janet Finch-Saunders, and James Evans.
Joining them were Rhianon Passmore, Huw Irranca-Davies, and Mick Antoniw from Labour, and Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds. No one from Plaid Cymru contributed to the debate.
Members praised her many patronages, including 14 Welsh charities, which count among them the Fields in Trust, Cardiff Royal Infirmary, and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
The Queen’s green credentials were also remarked on: she has planted over 1,500 trees during her reign and, for the Platinum Jubilee, she and Prince Charles launched a UK- wide initiative to celebrate the Jubilee by inviting people to plant a tree, The Queen’s Green Canopy.
Her Majesty reaches the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne this Sunday, 6th February. The Queen is the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch and the fourth longest-reigning monarch of all time.
The motion passed without objection.
Commenting after, Darren Millar – MS for Clwyd West – said:
“The Platinum Jubilee is an extraordinary achievement by our record-breaking Queen.
“It was good to see people from across the political spectrum in the Senedd coming together to thank Her Majesty for seven decades of selfless service to the people of Wales, UK and the Commonwealth. She has set a remarkable example for anyone in public life to follow.
“May God bless The Queen on this remarkable milestone in her reign.”
