The Health Minister today (April 30) published his interim statement on the continuing investigation and review into maternity services at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
Commenting, Angela Burns – the Shadow Health Minister – said:
“It is reassuring to read in this interim report that progress is being made, and that the Maternity Services Oversight Panel believes that the health board is on track to deliver against all of the Royal Colleges’ recommendations.
“However what we need to see is these changes embedded and that requires a change within the Health Board. As previous reports noted the culture throughout the Health Board needs to see significant improvement.
“Yet what cannot be ignored is the human tragedy in this. The pain felt by the bereaved parents over so many avoidable deaths must be unimaginable.
“And let’s be clear: these deaths were avoidable because – simply – maternity services at the health board failed.
“For their sakes, and to prevent further devastating losses, this review and the recommendations made must be implemented as soon as is possible.”
