Responding to the Denbighshire Council leader muting a councillor who objected to the authority setting the lowest care home fees in Wales, Sam Rowlands MS, Shadow Minister for Local Government, said:
“It’s frankly outrageous that a councillor has been silenced in this way.
“It’s bad enough that so many councils aren’t meeting entirely in person, without the hybrid format being abused to silence an elected representative.
“Councillors should get back to their chambers and debate these important issues in person, where nobody can press the mute button.”
Gareth Davies, Senedd Member for Vale of Clwyd, added:
“Given that care home residents in Denbighshire are £9000 per year worse off than those in Conwy, the Leader of Denbighshire County Council has demonstrated contempt for the most vulnerable people in the county by not allowing full and adequate scrutiny on such serious matters.
“I hope Cllr McLellan can embark on a period of reflection regarding his behaviour over the Easter break and come back with a more open and transparent attitude towards his colleagues and the people of Denbighshire.”
