Commenting on the news that the Australian state of Victoria has cancelled plans to host the 2026 Commonwealth games, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Tom Giffard MS said:
“The news today presents an opportunity for Wales as a sporting nation. Wales considered a bid 7 years ago, we would do well to do so again. These kinds of events are once in a generation and will keep Wales on visitors’ minds for years to come.
“The economic benefits would be immense as we would aim to showcase Wales’ natural beauty, our many attractions as well as our sporting prowess, putting us on the map as a world-beating tourist destination.
“The Labour Government should immediately start a new feasibility study for an ambitious Welsh bid for the 2026 Commonwealth games. I believe that a whole-of-Wales approach is the way forward.”
