Welsh Conservative and Shadow Economy Minister Russell George AM has commented on this afternoon’s news that Aberthaw Power Station near Barry is due to close next year, putting 170 jobs at risk. He said:
“It’s deeply worrying to hear of more workers in South Wales facing mass unemployment because their place of work is shutting down.
“While we must all make the effort to seek clean and renewable energy, strategy should be put into place early in these situations to ensure this doesn’t target livelihoods and future employment prospects.
“After the loss of Dawnus, Ford and Jistcourt in South Wales, this is another sorry blow to business in the area, and the wider companies that rely on these large industries.
“I urge the Welsh Government to step in swiftly to ensure support and retraining is offered to these skilled workers.”
