The Labour Government introduced a £5,000 grant to attract ethnic minority applicants to teacher training course in Wales.
The minority ethnic incentive grant is paid in two instalments to eligible student teachers: £2,500 on award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and £2,500 on completion of statutory induction.
Responding to an answer from the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Tom Giffard MS, Shadow Education Minister, said:
“It is truly shocking that the Labour Government has spent such large amounts of money to focus their recruitment efforts solely on ethnic minority teachers, when there is a shortage of all teachers across Wales.
“Labour must readdress their priorities and ensure they recruit capable teachers across the board as opposed to focussing on woke quotas.
“Labour’s record in Wales on education is a stark warning for the rest of the UK what a Labour Government will look like in Westminster. The Welsh Conservatives would ensure schools can deliver the standards of education that our children deserve and save Labour’s lost generation.”
