Commenting following the release of a Senedd Reform Committee report into the impact of proposed gender quotas for Welsh Parliament elections, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for the Constitution, Darren Millar MS said:
“This is a divisive and unnecessary piece of legislation which the Welsh Government does not have the powers to implement.
"Candidates for election should be selected on merit, not on the basis of their self-declared gender or any other protected characteristic.
"Sex matters, yet Labour Ministers seem to be incapable of defining what a woman is for the purposes of gender quotas in Senedd elections.
"This Bill clearly demonstrates how out of touch the Welsh Labour Government is with the priorities of the people of Wales. Ministers should focus on getting to grips with the poor performance of our NHS and driving up educational standards, rather than wasting time and resources on legislation that we don't need."
