Commenting following his questions to Labour’s Cabinet Secretary for Finance in the Senedd today on Labour’s decision to vote against a Welsh Conservative amendment to the Local Government Finance (Wales) Bill to enshrine the single person discount into law, Peter Fox MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance and Local Government said:
“I am not convinced that the single person discount is safe in the hands of Labour ministers seemingly intent on hiking council tax bills for thousands of residents across Wales.
“Labour’s council tax bill contains provisions for councils to disapply discounts if they so choose and while the Labour Minister says she is ‘confident’ that councils will not do this, that falls short of a concrete commitment.
“The Welsh Conservatives are clear, the single person discount is incredibly important, particularly for widowers, and must be enshrined into law, yet Labour seem intent on voting against our plans to protect this integral tax relief measure.”
