Commenting ahead of Angela Rayner’s planning announcement and on the latest housebuilding and homelessness statistics for Labour-run Wales, Mark Isherwood MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing and Planning said:
“After 25 years of Labour, we’ve been left with missed targets to eliminate rough sleeping, which will require action to tackle its complex causes and stop the “revolving door” of street homelessness, and to build the homes that Wales needs.
“Successive independent housing reports found that Wales needs between 12,500 and 15,000 houses a year, including 5,000 social homes and even the Welsh Centre for Public Policy stated in 2019 that up to 9,700 homes are needed annually.
“The Labour Welsh Government have, in fact, consistently failed to deliver even half the number of homes that Wales needs and as a result, both homeownership and rental remains out of reach for far too many Welsh people.
“Action by the Welsh Conservatives would include turning Wales’ empty properties back into homes, supporting small developers and establishing a dedicated taskforce of planners to tackle the backlog in the slowest performing councils.”
