Commenting on Tata Steel’s closure of ‘blast furnace 4’, marking an end to primary steelmaking, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies MS said:
“This is a very sad day for Wales, and in particular for our steelmaking communities.
“The loss of traditional steelmaking in Wales is yet another blow to our cultural and industrial heritage.
“We have to ask ourselves if our industrial strategy is really working in our favour, and level the playing field in favour of our communities.”
Samuel Kurtz MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Economy and Energy added:
“This is a sad day for a community that, in many ways, built this country.
“We must recognise the incredible contribution of the workforce over the years and now both governments must work tirelessly to ensure a proper and just transition.
“There is a bright future for steelmaking, the workforce and the wider community of Port Talbot, and all efforts must be focused on realising these opportunities.”
