- This Welsh Government’s only housing target is to build 20,000 new low carbon social homes for rent during this five year Senedd term.
- In the first two years of this Senedd term, Labour are claiming 5,775 homes have been delivered towards the 20,000 target.
Commenting on a response to a written question from Labour’s Housing Minister on their progress in delivering 20,000 low carbon social homes by 2026, Mark Isherwood MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Housing Minister, said:
“It is deeply concerning that this Labour Government have only delivered 20% of their target for new low carbon homes for social rent. Since realising their target is untenable Labour has changed the goalposts now counting some homes that are not new builds and not low carbon while also counting homes for intermediate rent and shared ownership.
“With only 18 months left to hit their target by 2026, and even with Labour’s changes, I cannot see them delivering on this target, especially given that Audit Wales also expects it to fall short of its target, leaving the housing crisis in Wales to continue”.
“Labour's housing crisis is of their own making, they must get on with building the necessary social housing and scrap their damaging policies forcing landlords out of the sector.”
