During Questions to Labour’s Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, the Welsh Conservatives have called for immediate action from the Labour Welsh Government as freezing temperatures and rising energy costs leave thousands of households in Wales struggling to keep warm.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Minister, Altaf Hussain MS, raised serious concerns in the Senedd, highlighting the devastating impact of the energy price cap increase, changes to the Winter Fuel Payment, and Wales’ disproportionately high standing charges for electricity, which are among the highest in the UK.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Equalities and Social Justice, Altaf Hussain MS, said:
“We are in the grip of a perfect storm for fuel poverty, with freezing temperatures, soaring energy costs, and families forced to make impossible decisions between heating and eating.
“Labour’s Autumn Budget will see further price rises for food and essentials, compounding the misery for already struggling families. Yet, fuel poverty is more than just an economic issue—it is a public health crisis. Cold weather is a critical factor in triggering heart attacks and other serious conditions.
“The Welsh Government must do more to shield the public from these devastating impacts. Warm words are not enough to keep people from freezing this winter, concrete action is needed now.”
