Vale of Glamorgan MP, Alun Cairns, has questioned the impact of the closure of Eagleswell School on the retail area of Llantwit Major.
Mr Cairns has questioned the intentions of the Vale Council who propose to close Eagleswell and has raised further concerns on the impact on the wider community. Mr Cairns believes that the commercial businesses as part of a mixed development on the Eagleswell site could undermine the shops in Llantwit Major Town Centre.
Llantwit Major has experienced major investment of late, where private shopkeepers have spent money developing their businesses.
Mr Cairns is concerned that opening further shops on the Eagleswell site will damage the prospects of the town centre, Crawshay Drive and Boverton Parade.
Alun said:
“The amalgamation of the schools and subsequent plans for the Eagleswell site will have a knock on implications for the centre of Llantwit Village. Any building on this site will bring on commercial pressures which may work against the town centre.
“With two small trading areas at Boverton Parade and Crawshay Drive serving local needs and I question the need for further commercial operations on the site in Llantwit.
“I have called on the Local Authority to very carefully consider not only the impact on the school amalgamation but the ongoing impact that would happen”
