Welsh Conservatives have called on the First Minister, Carwyn Jones, to “disown” Pontypridd MP – Owen Smith – over comments today about terrorist group ISIL.
Asked whether he believed Isil should be involved in future negotiations for peace, Mr Smith told a hustings audience:
"Ultimately all solutions to these sorts of international crises do come about through dialogue so eventually, if we are to try and solve this, all of the actors do need to be involved."
Responding, the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, said:
“The First Minister needs to show some leadership and disown his party from these comments.
“Owen Smith is vying for the chance to become a potential Prime Minister-in-waiting, and yet he wants to get ISIL around the table for discussions.
“It's dangerous language from a man with ambitions for the highest office, and this Labour leadership contest really is becoming a race to the bottom.
“One candidate with a history of talking to terrorists, and another who wants to instigate discussions with a group that has been responsible for lynchings and beheadings.
“It’s clear that Labour cannot be trusted with this country’s national security.”
