Commenting on the statements made by Nick Jackson – the CEO of the National Zoo of Wales – Andrew RT Davies MS, the Shadow Minister for Environment, which includes animal welfare, said:
“I and my Welsh Conservative colleagues were equally concerned by the misleading statement made by the Economy Minister yesterday in Plenary, and share Mr Jackson’s disappointment. We will keep pushing for financial support for zoos in Wales from the Welsh Government.
“One thing that will help #SaveOurZoos and other outdoor visitor sites survive is a relaxation of the five-mile rule, because it’s perfectly feasible to introduce social distancing in these outdoor places – if people are allowed to visit them.”
Welsh Conservatives have a petition calling on the Welsh Government to launch a Covid-19 Welsh Zoos Support Fund.
In England, zoos, safari parks, and drive-in cinemas can reopen from Monday if they follow social distancing rules.
