News that Wales’ women rugby players will be offered professional contracts for the first time has been welcomed by the Welsh Conservatives.
The Welsh Rugby Union announced that players will be offered contracts with 10 fully professional deals, plus 15 retainer contracts, for 12 months.
It will come into force from January 2022.
Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Sport, Tom Giffard MS, said:
“It is great to see our female rugby players will finally start receiving contracts, which demonstrates a huge commitment to the women’s game.
“The Welsh Rugby Union has rightly received criticism over the structures in place for the development of women and girls’ rugby, but this is a welcome step in the right direction.
“More can still be done to support clubs and players at amateur levels in Wales and I hope this news will be backed with further announcements for the grassroots game in due course.”
