Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Education, Laura Anne Jones MS has today demanded action from Labour ministers regarding the TikTok abuse of school teachers.
A craze on the social media app has seen children share videos of staff with inappropriate hashtags and comments and, sometimes, superimposing their faces onto pornography.
BBC Wales yesterday reported on teachers leaving the profession after even being labelled paedophiles on the app, whilst one school even called the police after staff were secretly filmed.
Speaking in the chamber this afternoon, Laura Anne Jones MS said: “This is causing a lot of distress for teachers who have been targeted, the teacher’s union NASUWT have examples of teachers taking time off work due to stress, and some even leaving the profession all together.
“I would welcome a detailed statement on this matter on what exact action and guidance has been issued to teachers, schools and local authorities on this matter.”
Commenting further on the news that teachers are quitting over slurs on the social media platform TikTok, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Education, Laura Anne Jones MS said:
“It’s highly concerning to see such abhorrent slurs stemming from TikTok.
“Teachers have felt the strain of the past 18 months as much as anyone and the last thing Welsh education needs as we recover is even fewer teachers, which would compound Labour’s recruitment failure over the past few years.
“The Labour Government in Cardiff Bay must work with the appropriate social media companies to take action against harmful content on their sites and to ensure that there’s a clear process for reporting content to protect individuals and restore confidence”.
