During spokesperson’s Questions to Labour’s Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Laura Anne Jones MS, raised concerns about Monmouthshire County Council, who have already proposed inflation busting council tax hikes, and haven’t ruled out raising taxes further, due to the underfunding from the Welsh Labour Government. Additionally, the Shadow Cabinet Secretary sought clarity on the deficit facing councils due to Labour’s National Insurance hike.
Commenting after the exchange, Laura Anne Jones MS, said:
“This is already a massive inflation busting council tax rise and it is still not enough to balance the books.
“The Council’s cuts will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in our society, particularly our children, with reports that some schools are so overstretched that they will have to share head teachers.
“With Councils still in the dark about the impact of the UK Labour Government’s National Insurance hike, this Welsh Labour Government still has no clue when councils will receive the millions of pounds needed to meet the demands of the £4 million gap created by Labour’s tax hike.”
