During spokesperson’s questions to Labour’s Cabinet Secretary for Education, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS, raised concerns about school violence and in particular the ignored warnings surrounding Ysgol Dyffryn Aman. Concerns were raised by the former deputy head teacher of the school about pupil behaviour and a lack of clarity in guidelines to address it, yet he felt he was being “palmed off” when he raised these concerns with the Welsh Labour Government.
Commenting after the exchange, Natasha Asghar MS, said:
“The allegations made by Ysgol Dyffryn Aman’s former deputy head are damning. To hear that this Labour Government ignored warnings and dismissed concerns before such a horrific incident is deeply concerning.
“We are now seeing similar incidents of knives in other schools, yet the Welsh Labour Government appears slow to act on school safety.
“Labour are asleep at the wheel when it comes to tackling violence in our schools and after numerous warnings, the problem threatens to spiral even further out of control. This is not a time for vague promises or future plans – urgent action is needed now to keep our students and teachers safe.”
