It’s official: according to Alzheimer’s Society Cymru (ASC), the Welsh Conservative Group is the first “dementia friendly” one in the Welsh Parliament.
Members and support staff have completed eye-opening awareness sessions – held both in their constituencies and at Ty Hywel in Cardiff Bay – with the aim of dispelling stereotypical impressions about the progressive disease.
These new “dementia friends” now know a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action.
Sue Phelps, Director of ASC, said:
“There are 45,000 people living with dementia in Wales. We all have a part to play in improving the lives of people living with dementia, but we need the Welsh Government – and every AM – to play their part in creating a dementia-friendly Wales.
“Dementia doesn't care who you are, it could affect us all. Someone develops the condition every three minutes and there's currently no cure.
“People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised, and isolated, and that means that they're less likely to be able to live independently in their own communities.”
