Welsh Conservatives are holding a Senedd debate this afternoon calling on the Welsh Government to reverse the introduction of the Wales-wide nitrate vulnerable zone.
Last month, the Labour Welsh Government – propped up by the Brecon and Radnorshire Lib Dems - announced the introduction of a nitrate vulnerable zone (NVZ) across Wales despite promising farmers it would not do so during the pandemic.
Farmers across the country have reacted furiously and accused the Welsh Government of a ‘betrayal’ and Welsh Conservatives will today call for the decision to be reversed.
Commenting ahead of the debate, Welsh Conservative rural affairs spokesperson, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:
"The Welsh Labour Government’s decision – supported by the Lib Dems – to implement NVZs across Wales is a real kick in the teeth for our farmers.
“On numerous occasions Labour promised farmers they wouldn’t introduce these regulations while we were still dealing with the coronavirus crisis.
“They’ve broken that promise and shown farmers and the Welsh public you can’t trust Labour when it comes to protecting livelihoods and the food security of Wales and our United Kingdom.
“Welsh Conservatives would scrap these plans after May’s Senedd election but we hope ministers listen to our calls today and reverse this decision immediately."
