Commenting on news that Wales’ tourism industry has called on the Labour Government to rethink its self-catering taxation plans, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Tom Giffard MS, said:
“We have been abundantly clear from the outset that the current housing crisis is a result of years of failure from Labour to build enough houses across the country.
“Instead of looking to punish second home owners, Labour ministers need to work to address the housing shortage - especially as until recently there were more empty homes in Wales than second homes - and protect the country’s tourism offering.
“We hope the Labour Government will take up this offer, and the Welsh Conservatives are continuing to fight for our tourism industry by holding a debate in the Senedd this week.
“We will be reiterating our calls for the economically-illiterate tourism tax to be dropped and plans to extend the number of days that a property must be left in order to meet the non-domestic rating requirement to be scrapped.”
