Deputy Sport Minister, Dawn Bowden who was expected to attend Wales' World Cup match with Iran will now stay at home due to recent protests in the country. It was the only group match Bowden was due to attend.
Commenting on the news, Welsh Conservative Shadow Sport Minister, Tom Giffard MS said:
“The Labour party can’t quite decide whether or not they are going to be attending the Qatar world cup. The hypocrisy is clear for all to see. Keir Starmer is boycotting the event and says that is ‘the position of the party’, when in fact, their most senior elected politician, Mark Drakeford is attending.
“Now Dawn Bowden, who was due to jet off to Qatar to attend the Wales-Iran game as part of her latest escapade abroad, has decided to U-turn on that decision.
“It is right however, that the Welsh team are fully supported in their first World Cup since the 1950s. I hope that Mark Drakeford will still attend and not bow to the same pressure as his Deputy Sport Minister.”
Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford and Economy Minister Vaughan Gething are due to be attending other World Cup ties.
